5th grade math

Here are some things you can do to practice your math skills.

- Practice skip counting by 2, 3, and 5 starting at the number 65. Remember to go at least two numbers above 100.
- Count forward 1 to 100 and backwards 100 to 1. It is important for great mathematicians to be able to know which number is next without having to stop and count.
- Solve these problems:
I spy a number that is 10 more than 34
I spy a number that is 10 less than 65
I spy a number that is 20 more than 43
I spy a number that is 20 less than 84
I spy a number that is 30 more than 15
I spy a number that is 30 less than 76
- Solve the following word problems:
Over the weekend, I painted 23 flower pots. Next weekend, I am planning on painting 24 more flower pots. How many flower pots will I have painted in all?
I made 32 cupcakes. My children and their families came over and ate 16 of the cupcakes. How many cupcakes do I have left?
- Write a math story book, like the book about Tom, and don't forget to illustrate it. If you choose this activity, please email me your book because I am always looking for something good to read.
- Take a deck of cards and take the face cards out. You can use the cards to practice your fluency in adding and subtracting like we did in class.
- Also using the deck of cards, you can draw to cards and that becomes the number, example would be 2,5 so the number is 25. Draw two more cards and make a number, example 4,2 so the number is 42. Add the two numbers together using expanded algorithm.
- Practice subtracting 10 from any number. Draw it using base ten blocks. An example would be like this:
25-10=                ll ***** + l = l *****= 15  Email me a picture showing me your awesome work.
- Solve these problems 32+46, 15+35, 43+24, 61+22 using expanded algorithm. An example would be like this:
41 + 24 =                        40 + 1              or               (40+20) + (1+4)
                                       20 + 4                                      60+5
                                       ______                                      65
                                       60 + 5 = 65
- Play the game Pathways
Use a coin with heads being 1 and tails being 10. You will flip the coin. If it lands on heads, you add 1 to the previous number. If it lands on tails, you add 10 to the previous number. You will make a pathway from 1 to 100. You can see an example game I played below. Have fun and email me a picture of your games.
1 2
  12
  22 23 24 25
        35 36 37
            47
            57 58
              68
              78
              88
              98 99 100
